Preparation is crucial when introducing a new pet to your home. Yet, sometimes fate has other plans.
I took ample time preparing for Matilda’s arrival. In contrast, Cow just happened. Matilda wasn’t initially fond of Cow, leaving me anxious about their relationship. Surprisingly, they now occasionally share warm moments together.
Then, not long ago, another unexpected visitor showed up. A young black cat, about 9-10 months old, began spending evenings on our patio, seeking warmth during the crisp autumn nights.

Although it started with us merely feeding her, we soon got attached, especially after the recent passing of my boyfriend’s older black cat, Salem. However, Salem lived with his family, not with us and our two dogs.
As winter approached, our bond grew stronger. The sight of deceased cats in the vicinity, coupled with the knowledge of the potential dangers she faced due to her dark fur, weighed on my heart.
So, despite her resistance, I took her to a local vet for a microchip check. When none was found, we had her chipped and neutered. Though she had fleas and worms, she thankfully tested negative for more serious conditions.
Introducing Sabrina Neither Matilda nor Cow is particularly fond of cats. However, they’re both intelligent and can be trained.
To facilitate their interaction, I invested in a multi-level cat enclosure, a cat climber, a baby gate, and some dog relaxation aids. To focus on training individually, Cow temporarily moved in with my parents.
I anticipated keeping Sabrina separate from the dogs until we shifted to a more spacious home in the distant future. The initial months were undoubtedly challenging.
Whenever Sabrina explored the apartment, the dogs were confined. Their reaction to her movements was loud and incessant barking. They showed clear signs of animosity, often attempting to chase her when they could.
Yet, with gradual training, abundant rewards, persistence, and a fair share of patience, their relationship started to transform. Today, they coexist in the same space without cages, with only occasional playful chases – even initiated by Sabrina!
Though there’s room for improvement, I’m elated at the progress everyone has made. Their growing understanding of each other has also deepened my appreciation for them.
I’m eager to share our journey, including our successes, challenges, and amusing experiences.
