I’ve always been a dog enthusiast in every sense of the term. The idea of having a cat never crossed my mind. Yet, Sabrina, our charming black feline, has been part of our family for half a year now. She’s still a puzzle to me in many ways, so different from the dogs.
- Cat Behavior Mystifies Me One thing that’s intriguing is how cat owners react to their pets’ antics. Cats sometimes do things that, if done by a dog, might warrant correction. But with cats, it’s often brushed off with a “That’s just cats for you!”
I’ve tried giving Sabrina plenty of elevated spaces in our apartment, but there are places she’s not supposed to venture into. For a dog, a firm “no” usually works. But Sabrina? She’ll stare at me when I say “down,” and often, she’ll decide to move just as I approach her. I try to reinforce her good behavior with treats, but I’m learning to let Sabrina be Sabrina, not expecting her to behave like a dog.
It’s a realization that when pets don’t behave as we expect, it’s not a slight against us. It simply means we need to approach training differently.
- Not All Cats Love Constant Attention With Cow, our dog, I can shower her with affection any time. Sabrina? Not so much. Depending on her mood, she might playfully swipe at me or show indifference when I try to cuddle. Figuring out the right moment to pet her is still a learning curve for me.
Interestingly, even dogs sometimes prefer their space. My journey with Sabrina is teaching me to be more observant about when pets really want attention.
Cats Can Be Affectionate Too One of my hesitations about getting a cat was missing out on the joyful greetings dogs are known for. But Sabrina has her own way of showing affection, weaving between our legs and occasionally seeking attention – not just when she’s hungry.
Cats and Dogs Can Coexist While Matilda and Cow are still learning how to engage with Sabrina, there’s mutual respect. Initially, there were chases and misunderstandings. Yet, as days pass, Sabrina becomes more relaxed around them. It’s comical watching her sometimes approach the dogs, giving them a little tap and darting off, taking on the role of the cheeky younger sibling.
It brings me immense joy to see all my pets peacefully sharing the same space. The dream of seeing them snuggled up might be far-fetched for now, but if it ever happens, it’d be an overwhelmingly adorable sight.
