[Recipe] Simple Chicken Tacos for Your Canine Companion

Matilda and Cow’s 7th birthday was marked by a delightful treat of dog-friendly tacos. If you’ve been following our posts, you might recall our Cinco De Mayo bean taco treats shared earlier. These latest tacos are complete meals in themselves, packed with all the good stuff. The highlight? They’re nutritious and easy for most dogs to digest, irrespective of their regular diets.

Cow’s health has seen some fluctuations, particularly after a severe episode of pancreatitis last year. Since then, she’s been on a low-fat regimen and seldom consumes anything uncooked. Fortunately, after adapting to a diet based on her 5Strands test—which is devoid of allergens—her health has shown noticeable improvement. I’m contemplating reintroducing fresher ingredients into her meals. Yet, some foods, even healthy ones like sardines, can upset her stomach. So, venturing back to raw foods for her needs caution. Although there are low-fat raw food choices available, I’ve been mostly offering her cooked chicken breast.

In contrast, she’s currently faring well and seems to be flourishing. There’s a part of me that believes she was at her peak health during her younger days, scavenging food off the streets. Probably because it was only around her second year that her food sensitivities became evident.

Matilda, on the other hand, remains an undiscriminating eater. The two of them relished the chicken tacos I prepared. I made these in tandem with a similar dinner for my family. The best part? Crafting a hearty, wholesome meal featuring our top picks. After setting aside some mashed avocado for the dogs, the rest went into a sumptuous guacamole. Trust me; we’re not holding off until the next canine birthday for another round of this!

  1. Use a mug to fashion mini tortilla rounds suitable for dogs.
  2. Warm the tortilla rounds on a pan or stovetop for about 15 seconds on each side until they’re warm and pliable.
  3. Layer each mini tortilla with mashed avocado.
  4. Place diced chicken breast on top.
  5. Add a sprinkle of cheese.
  6. Garnish with cilantro.
  7. Ready to serve!

Spicing Up Your Dog’s Meals Dogs are usually content with plain, boiled chicken, but you can introduce certain seasonings for an enhanced taste. Many, like cilantro, are also rich in antioxidants and combat illnesses. Steer clear from onions and spicy peppers and research any ingredient you’re unsure about.

Lastly, avocados are indeed safe for canines, but steer clear of their peel, leaves, and pit. They’re packed with beneficial fats. In fact, there’s a dog food named Avoderm that incorporates avocados.

Refrain from adding salt; it’s not essential and might not be beneficial.
