Why I Bathe with My Dogs – and How You Can Give It a Try

It seems my quirks have become more apparent in this blog, which excites me. Over the last seven years of sharing about my experiences with Matilda and Cow, both in my posts and daily interactions, I’ve gathered a trove of unconventional yet effective ways of doing things.

I’ve bathed my dogs in various places – Matilda fits even in a small bathroom sink, while Cow has had her share of baths in a larger basement sink. We’ve tried bathtubs and solo showers, but truly, nothing compares to the experience of sharing a shower with one or both of them.

This method allows me to thoroughly clean every inch of them, ensuring a quick and less distressing bath for them.

However, there’s one thing I can’t stand – getting my outfit drenched while bathing them from outside the shower. It reminds me of that unpleasant feeling of stepping into water with socks on – utterly uncomfortable.

Is It Advisable to Share a Shower with Your Dog? The primary concern here is the risk of slipping. It’s crucial to ensure your bath mat is spacious enough for both you and your dog. If your dog panics, the challenge of keeping them in the tub without you slipping becomes real.

Moreover, water splashing from the shower can enter your dog’s nostrils and ears. I use a removable showerhead, positioning it against the wall when applying shampoo, ensuring a safer experience.

Using a fixed showerhead poses challenges. For instance, while attempting to rinse Matilda, she has often tried to clamber onto me to escape the water, occasionally scratching me in the process. However, when I place her on the bath mat and use the handheld showerhead, she remains calm.

Is Human Shampoo Suitable for Dogs? Dogs’ skin reacts differently than ours to products. Human shampoos, even the gentle ones designed for babies, can be harsh on a dog’s skin. Using these products can strip away essential oils, leading to dry, itchy, and flaky skin that’s susceptible to infections.

When I plan to wash my hair, I do it before inviting the dogs into the shower. Interestingly, even if they’re not particularly keen on baths, they often seem eager to join me.

Their willingness might stem from their desire to be near me. This proximity, I believe, makes the process smoother for them.

What if Sharing a Shower Isn’t My Thing? If you’re not keen on sharing a shower with your dog or it’s not feasible, there are alternatives. Consider using a more spacious area, like a bathtub or even a kiddie pool. You can accompany them, donning a swimsuit or old attire, ensuring you’re close while giving them a thorough wash.

But if these methods aren’t appealing, there’s always the option of using a sink or seeking the services of a professional groomer. The ultimate goal is to make the cleaning process as stress-free and effective as possible for both parties.
